Involvement of Union Health Ministry for GBS cases in Pune
GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder wherein, the immune system attacks the nervous system, often following bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms to be noticed include numbness in limbs and prolonged diarrhea. The syndrome is on the rise in Pune, apparently due to impurity of the water in the primary water source of the city.
A seven-member Union Health Ministry team has been appointed to assist Maharashtra in tackling the, recently in spotlight, Guillain-Barre syndrome. Three members of the team have already arrived. The team was put to task to curb the increasing number of cases. Assurance is given by doctors of full recovery on treatment.
A Rapid Response Team was set up immediately after the report of the first 24 cases, to take control of the situation. A Union Health Ministry Team consisting of seven members, is to be sent to Pune to inspect the spread of GBS. The team is expected to assist the city with their medical expertise. As of yet, three members have already arrived.
The number of cases has risen to 73, with 6 new cases reported on Friday itself. 47 men and 26 women have been severely affected, while 14 are on ventilator support as a result of the syndrome. Doctors have confidently assured that the disorder can be dealt with completely and fully with the help of appropriate treatment. Residents are strongly urged to check the purity of water they drink and maintain general hygiene standards in order to stay safe and healthy.
