An Enemy of the Immune System- GBS Cases in Pune Notice a Surge


Guillain-Barre Syndrome, popularly known as GBS is a rare condition in which, the infected individual's immune system attacks the nerves, resulting in symptoms such as weakness, numbness in limbs and sometimes even paralysis. This first starts off as a tingling sensation in hands and feet and then gradually proceeds to affect the entire body, leading to paralysis. The exact cause of the origin of this disease in unknown but investigations are yet to yield results. GBS cases in Pune has experienced a sudden upsurge in the past few weeks. The reason for this spread is attributed to the contamination of water but certain bacteria in the Khadakwasla dam, which is the primary drinking water source in Pune.

The number of victims of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) have crossed 100 cases in Pune, Maharashtra, with one suspected death reported in Solapur, by the same. A total of 101 patients are seeking treatment, out of which 16 have surrendered to ventilator support. The syndrome seems to affect victims of all age groups.

A patient traveling from Pune to Solapur has contracted the syndrome, only confirming its place of thriving. Currently, a total of 101 patients are suffering from the disease, out of which 16 are heavily affected and have sought ventilator support. 68 men and 33 women are victims of it, proving that the disease is generic while attacking the immunity systems of individuals. 81 cases in Pune city, 14 in Pimpri Chinchwad and 6 from nearby districts have been reported as of yet.


Water samples from the dam in Pune have been sent for testing, as traces of Norovirus and Campylobacter Jejuni bacteria have been discovered in the stool samples of the affected individuals. A central health team will visit Pune shortly, to assess the ongoing situation. Residents are requested to maintain hygiene and be cautious about consumption of water. Any sort of symptoms should be reported to a doctor with immediate effect.
