PCMC Demolition Clears Out Unauthorized Constructions, Causing Unemployment for Small Businesses
A PCMC demolition drive was conducted in the areas of Chikhali, Kudalwadi, Jadhavwadi, Hargudewasti and Pawarwasti where multiple scrap shops, warehouses and small businesses that supplied auto parts were ferally demolished. This incident occurred on the fifth day of the drive and was primarily carried out by Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
PCMC demolition caused an uproar where various scrap shops and warehouses that supplied auto parts were brought down. This left the industry disrupted and workers unemployed. This incident has affected many small industries in multiple cities of Maharashtra. As a result, the citizens questioned the purpose of the demolition along with the social and infrastructure breakdown.
As an outcome in terms of economy, a Rupees.1,000 crore turnover industry was disrupted, leaving 1,000 workers and laborers unemployed and in a wretched situation financially. Due to the PCMC demolition, many small industries in Jalna, Surat, Mumbai and Nashik were affected due to delayed or no supply of raw materials. This drive made citizens wonder if it had any ulterior motive behind like, land acquisition.
It also resulted in the surge of the price of the 1,000-acre land cleared and ultimately attracted real estate developers. In terms of social and infrastructure welfare, residents suffered greatly as there was immediate shut down of roads and mobile networks, along with electricity cut and discontinuation of water supply. Due to the mental stress caused by unemployment and other losses, a couple of workers and two entrepreneurs suffered from cardiac arrest, further worsening their conditions. While PCMC targets unauthorized and illegal construction, the demolitions have triggered mass economic distress, unemployment and infrastructure failures, raising concerns about unethical acquisition of land and property.
