Public Given a Green Signal, as PMC Confirms Meat and Seafood Safety
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) confirms meat and seafood safety regarding GBS. The tests conducted to check the same claim that all tested meat and seafood samples are safe, easing consumer and business concerns. This assurance follows a large-scale inspection conducted under Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) directives, prompted by health concerns related to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
Meat and seafood contamination led researchers and public to believe it to be the true cause for the spread of GBS cases. However, after multiple sample testing, it was fully proved that meat and seafood safety has been retained by vendors, and the origin of GBS is another thing altogether. PMC offered assurance to consumers.
The PMC’s veterinary team inspected 191 meat shops, collecting 11 raw meat and seafood samples, which laboratory tests later confirmed as contamination-free. Additionally, on January 29, 60 raw chicken samples were tested from 54 shops across Pune, Pune Rural, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Authorities have reinforced food hygiene protocols, instructing vendors to use potable water, maintain cleanliness, and serve fully cooked food.
The PMC also issued a public advisory emphasizing safe food handling, thorough cooking, and hygiene measures to prevent foodborne illnesses. Dr. Sarika Funde, PMC’s Health Officer, reassured the public of stringent safety standards. Business owners welcomed the results, which affirmed compliance with food safety regulations, ensuring continued consumer confidence.
