117 Patients have Recovered from the GBS Outbreak, Disease Reaches its Closure
The Pune Municipal Corporation has officially sought permission from the state health department to declare the end of the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak, following a deadline in cases.
GBS is now, treatable nerve disorder that causes weakness and numbness in the patient. It had started off in only a few areas in Pune including Sinhagad and the reason for its spread was attributed to contaminated food and water. PMC has officially announced the end of this outbreak.
The last reported case in the affected areas was on March 2, 2025. Since January, Pune witnessed 141 cases and nine suspected deaths, with 120 confirmed infections. While 117 patients have recovered, 15 remain under treatment. Health officials suspect contaminated water and food were the primary sources of infection, with the outbreak peaking on January 20.
Dr. Nina Borade, PMC health chief, stated that while the outbreak is over, passive surveillance will continue. GBS is a treatable nerve disorder causing weakness, numbness, and, in severe cases, respiratory issues. No new cases have emerged since early March.
