Women's Mobile Toilets Project to be Revived by PMC Shortly
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had initially launched the “Ti Toilets” in 2016, with 11 mobile units converted from public transport buses. However, due to a lack of funds, only three remained operational and the project eventually came to a standstill. PMC plans to revive this project for women, using the same method of converting scrapped public transport.
PMC is all set to launch mobile toilets for women for the second time. This project was first brought to life in 2016, at the time of which scrapped public transport was used to create the structure enforcing environment sustainability along with general hygiene. However, the expansion of this project could not be continued due to monetary constraint.
The service is set to operate again, with some modifications. As a source of funding, PMC plans on tapping Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and charge Rs 5 for usage to keep the project viable and feasible for both parties. The program will be managed in collaboration with a private unnamed organization. Initially, 25 buses will be converted into mobile toilets.
Depending on the response from users, the authorities plan on increasing the number of them to 75 in later phases. Women activists and local residents have supported the initiative, stressing the need for safe and clean public toilets, especially at high-footfall locations like markets and stations where public health and hygiene is conveniently compromised. The project aims to provide hygienic and accessible sanitation for women, addressing both health and safety concerns.
