1,000 CCTV Cameras to be Installed as Part of Smart City Project
Pune is set for yet another massive road-digging project, with 500 km of roads slated for excavation to install 1,000 new CCTV cameras. While the initiative aims to enhance city-wide surveillance, residents are concerned about recurring disruptions and financial strain.
PMC is set to excavate 500 km of road network to install 1,000 new CCTV cameras for better surveillance of the city. Although initiated with goodwill, PMC is facing backlash from Pune residents for repeated digging of roads. Citizens hope for lesser financial strain this time and also better coordination between agencies.
The municipal corporation has already spent ₹500 crore on road repairs due to past projects. If excavation fees are waived - like in previous government initiatives- the city may bear an additional ₹200-₹300 crore for restoration.
The CCTV expansion is a part of a broader plan, including disaster management centers and smart city projects, which could lead to nearly 1,000 km of roadwork. Citizens are calling for better coordination between agencies to avoid repeated digging, as the municipal body debates between public security and financial prudence.
