Pune Metro and Kharadi Airport Extension Underway, Initiative by Murlidhar Mohol
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been directed to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for a new metro extension from Kharadi to Pune International Airport. This extension will seamlessly integrate with the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi corridor, enhancing airport connectivity and easing congestion.
Pune Metro expansion has been proposed by the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation. This has been initiated keeping in mind the convenience and feasibility for the residents of the city. Improving connectivity to Pune's IT hubs, bettering commuter convenience and reducing traffic congestion are the main objectives of this expansion project.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol has proposed several metro expansions, including Katraj to Hinjawadi- to improve connectivity to Pune’s IT hub; Chandni Chowk to Wagholi, Nigdi to Swargate, and Shivajinagar to Kharadi- converging at Kharadi as a Multimodal Transport Hub for improved commuter convenience, and Vanaj to Chandni Chowk– a double-decker flyover is proposed to reduce traffic congestion.
Pune Metro’s ridership continues to rise, with 49.69 lakh commuters in January 2025, generating ₹7.87 crore in revenue. The Ramwadi-Vanaz corridor led with ₹4.22 crore earnings. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has allocated ₹699.13 crore for Pune Metro expansion and maintenance in the 2025-26 Budget, ensuring improved urban transport infrastructure.
