Pune Improves its Rank in the Global List of Traffic Congestion
In a significant step towards better urban mobility, Pune has recorded a 10.44% increase in traffic speed and a 53% reduction in congestion over the past two months. This improvement is the result of coordinated efforts between the Pune Police and the Municipal Corporation.
Pune's traffic situation has significantly improved and continues to do so. This initiative of easing traffic congestion was collectively carried out by the Pune Police and Municipal Corporation and has proved to be impressively promising. Strict measures have been implemented and immediate action against violators have helped reduce over 50% of the total traffic congestion.
Under the leadership of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Additional Commissioner Manoj Patil, strategic measures such as signal synchronization, removal of road bottlenecks, and relocation of bus and auto stands have been implemented across 33 major roads covering 265 kilometers. Strict enforcement against violations like drunk driving and triple riding led to action against over 4.45 lakh violators in early 2024—almost double the previous year’s figures.
With 445 trained officers and more in training, authorities aim to further ease city travel using advanced technology and smart planning. Pune, once ranked 4th globally for traffic congestion, has now improved to 7th place, signaling promising progress.
