Surge in Water Tanker Sales in Pune Due to Weather Conditions and Unequal Water Distribution
Recently, Pune has experienced a sharp rise in water tanker supply since January 2023. A sale of 7,112 more tankers has taken place in 2024, the original number being 39,692. This demand has been attributed to factors like rising temperatures and unequal water distribution in the city.
Water tankers have recently made way into the system of water consumption in Pune. This is due to many factors like, unhygienic water, unequal distribution of it and also, the GBS outbreak currently. PMC 's involvement is also evident, and GPS monitoring has been planned.
Amidst this, PMC extracts more than its sanctioned 11.5 TMC water quota, risking fines and supply cuts by the Water Resources Department. To curb water theft, which is usually a general practice, GPS monitoring has been planned for tanker filling points, but no cap on water pricing by private tankers has been decided. Water tankers are feasible for the general public since many areas still rely on tankers despite PMC's equitable water distribution plan.
In addition to this, 23 newly added villages- Uruli, Devachi and Fursungi face the highest dependency on water tankers. However, some pipeline-fed areas still lack proper water supply, with PMC helplines unresponsive. In a nutshell, since 2022 the sale of water tankers has significantly increased due to various factors in Pune.
