Pune has witnessed a worrying rise in suicide cases, with men accounting for the majority. As per data from the Pune Police Commissionerate, 862 suicides were reported in 2024 so far, of which 583 were men.
The rise in suicide rates in Pune have become a serious concern, more so because the group contains majority of male victims. Unattended mental health issues and poor support from family and workplace pose to be the reason for this sudden rise in the number of deaths by suicide amongst men.
Suicides are more frequent in industrial areas and labor settlements, with causes ranging from financial stress, job loss, heartbreak, and academic pressure to harassment by private moneylenders.
