Pune Returns to Square 'A' Heatwave After Brief Shower
After a brief cool spell, Pune is once again reeling under a severe heatwave. On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Pashan station reported a scorching 41.4°C — the highest in the district this season.
The short-lived respite last week came from thunderstorms and scattered showers, especially over Pashan, which had received the most rainfall. However, with the weather system weakening, temperatures have surged again. Lohegaon followed closely at 41°C, Rajgurunagar at 40.5°C, and Koregaon Park at 40.2°C. Shivajinagar, usually the city’s hottest spot, logged 39.2°C — a steep rise from 36.2°C just 48 hours earlier.
Pune has been experiencing a haywire pattern of climatic conditions since the past one week. The onset of short-lived period of rains served as a relief to residents. Prior to that, intense temperatures in the city had raised serious environmental and health concerns. According to IMD experts, the season is predicted to get harsher.
Hotspots like Magarpatta, Shirur, and Dhamadere also continue to sizzle. While daytime heat intensifies, minimum temperatures are dipping slightly — Shivajinagar dropped to 17.6°C, 1.5°C below normal. According to IMD’s S.D. Sanap, above-normal temperatures are expected to persist for the next two to three days, marking a harsh start to Pune’s summer.
