Presence of Water Hyacinth in Mula River Raises Health Concerns Caused by Mosquito Infestation
Residents of Bopodi, Sangvi, Pimple Gurav and Dapodi are facing an alarming mosquito infestation, affecting approximately 25,000 to 30,000 people. The root cause of this growing problem is the increasing presence of water hyacinth in the Mula river, which has created favorable conditions for mosquito infestation.
Areas in Pune have recently had to face severe mosquito infestation due to the unclean conditions of the Mula river nearby. This was caused due to the presence of water hyacinth in the water body that habitually led to stagnation of water. Therefore, the river served as a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, leading to the spontaneous spread of diseases.
Despite repeated complaints, to local authorities, no effective measures have been taken to address the issue. The proliferation of water hyacinth in the river has resulted in stagnant water, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes and leading to widespread health concerns. Additionally, the Mula river's deterioration has caused severe pollution, with sewage, waste, and garbage accumulating along the riverbanks exacerbating the situation.
Local activists and residents, including social worker, Nilesh Hake have called for immediate action to remove the water hyacinth and address the growing public health threat. Political leaders have also expressed frustration with the lack of respinse from the administration, threatening protests if the issue is not resolved swiftly.
