Students of Savitribai Phule Pune University to Protest Against Unauthorized Felling of Trees to Safeguard Environmental Interests
Environmental concerns have erupted at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) after nearly 50 rare trees were allegedly cut down in a forested area behind Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue.
Savitribai Phule University in Pune became a spectacle as felling of 50 rare trees in the premises was reported. Students were apparently unaware of the action taking place as all of it was done in the cover of darkness leaving everyone clueless at the revelation. External authorities have tried to intervene, but university officials remained oblivious.
Adding to the alarm, debris has been dumped at the site, sparking suspicions of land clearing for a future project. Students claim that tractors and bulldozers operated under the cover of darkness to bury felled trees. Viral social media videos led to an inspection by acting registrar Dr. Jyoti Bhakre, but university officials have remained silent.
Students link the tree cutting to a previously scrapped convention center project, allegedly being reconsidered after Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's recent visit. Students have vowed protests if deforestation continues.
