PMC Employs the Use of Fog Cannon Trucks to Combat Summer Heat
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced fog cannon trucks to combat rising dust pollution. These machines spray a fine mist to suppress dust, offering temporary relief in high-pollution areas like roadsides and construction sites.
PMC has introduced the use of fog cannon trucks to beat the rising heat in Pune. The machine sprays slight mist into the air providing relief for a short span of time. Studies somehow prove that the effectiveness of this system may not be promising. Additionally, its operational costs are also being questioned.
However, experts question their long-term effectiveness. Wind disperses the mist quickly, and once dry, dust particles return to the air. Additionally, studies suggest that mist may interact with pollutants, worsening PM2.5 levels.
Despite these drawbacks, the high operational cost of frequent deployments adds to the strain on public funds. While the initiative seems proactive, sustainable measures like urban greening, better construction practices, and stricter regulations remain unaddressed. Are fog cannons just another expensive band-aid on a deep-rooted pollution crisis?
