Rising Heat in Pune Intensifies Water Crisis
The rising heat has intensified Pune's water crisis, forcing residents to rely heavily on tanker services. According to the municipal corporation, 38,532 tankers supplied water in February alone, with the total reaching 4,04,340 for the current financial year.
Due to water shortage, residents of Pune are resorting to the usage of tankers. The residents' heavy reliance on water tankers has led to a shocking number of 38,532 of sale in the month of February only. The unreasonable use of tankers coupled with other obstacles has resulted in major concerns over the water situation in the upcoming summer months.
Despite sourcing water from the Khadakwasla dam chain and Bhama Ashked project, several areas face shortages. The municipal corporation provides free tankers in affected areas, but a significant number come from private contractors, costing the administration ₹40 crore annually. Meanwhile, private tanker operators exploit citizens by charging arbitrary rates, as the civic body has no control over pricing.
Adding to the crisis, repeated pipeline bursts on Sinhagad road waste thousands of liters of water. With two more months of summer ahead, water demand is expected to rise further. Authorities have urged citizens to use water judiciously to mitigate the crisis.
